Description

Climbing plant native to Southern USA, Mexico and Central America. Produces egg shaped fruits filled with fruity, orange pulp and has a pineapple/orange scent.

 

Properties and Uses

Used to aid in the transition to restful sleep and is a herb of choice for intransigent insomnia. The plant is said to have a calming and anti-spasmodic effect and can be effective for nerve pain such as neuralgia.

History

First discovered in Peru in the 1500's by botanist Nicolas Monardes. Became popular with Victorans in the 1800's and leaves were used by native North Americans to heal cuts and bruises.
